Update. We completed our journey! Our son was born in June 2006. It was a bit trying. After eleven weeks of bedrest we made it to week 35. In spite of being a bit early he was fully baked and healthy at just over six pounds. Mother and baby spent one night in the hospital before coming home. Now he spends most days helping me with the business. If you hear a baby in the background when you call you'll be able to put a face with the voice. Best wishes to all of you.
About us. I had a vasectomy almost 20 years ago. I have two grown children, 22 and 24 years old. I met a younger woman. We fell in love. She wanted at least one child. I checked into vasectomy reversals and found it was a possibility. Shortly after we were married I had the reversal surgery.
The sperm life cycle is 74 to 76 days. This means that male fertility changes slowly. The effects of changes you make today do not show up for almost three months. It takes awhile for a vasectomy reversal to "kick in." We wanted to know more than what "professional" semen analysis told us every three months.
I have a Ph.D. in chemistry and was sure that doing our own semen analysis could not be that hard. The truth is it's not hard. You do not need an advanced degree to do it. It's actually pretty easy. All you have to do is use a microscope. High school kids can use a microscope. The hard part is getting all the equipment together. We've done that for you.
The table below shows my sperm counts and motility using our kit (Home SA) and by professional semen analysis. One important thing to notice is that I had low counts and almost no motility for nearly a year after my vasectomy reversal. The take home message is be patient and take your vitamins.
So, why would you want to do your own semen analysis (besides maintaining your privacy and sparing yourself embarrassment)? Some of our reasons were that we often wondered if the Lab was doing as good a job as we hoped. Since my semen quality was a critical issue for us, we worried that maybe the Lab did not analyze the sample quickly enough. Maybe the sample got cold. Maybe the Lab was busy with other, more pressing analyses. Also, it was important to us to have more frequent feed back than a single result every three or four months. We wanted to have more control over our fertility issues.
Our success led us to start this company. We think you will be as pleased with your results as we were with ours. Please let us know how it goes for you.
